Poems from the Poetry Group
In 2025 we started a poetry writing group and the poems that have emerged from the group are too good to be unpublished.
Petunias by Bronwyn Bryant
I remember the petunias
how they overflowed the hanging baskets
singing pinks and reds
in loud unashamed voices
never worried about missing a beat
or singing a bum note
just full of joy
in being
fully self expressed
My Handbag by Dee Searby
My handbag's like a P.A. who anticipates my needs
With it firmly on my shoulder, anxiety recedes.
It holds tissues for a runny nose, drops for gritty eyes,
A comb for my unruly hair, sunglasses for disguise.
Scissors for a jagged nail, bandaids for broken skin,
There's a notebook, pen and peppermints and one large safety pin.
There is lipstick, perfume, cleansing gel, a toothbrush just for me,
There are tablets for a headache, plus Rescue Remedy.
If one day I become confused and need assistance getting home,
I've got a wallet full of helpful cards,my I.D, keys and phone.
Gem of Wisdom by Barbara Hawthorn
I have weathered like stone
chipped from the block-face
all sharp-angled and edged.
I have slithered, clattering
on steep scree-slopes
of self-opinionated youth
lodged in some crevice
faced the bombardment
of brutal boulders borne on
streams silted with gritty truths
and from that long prevailing flow
I have emerged on calmer shores
high above the daily tidal heave.
I lie polished now, a natural gem
My glowing colours, I believe
lay all the time within, concealed
till all conceits were scoured away
and wisdom was revealed.
